How a color recipe is born: from the sample to the lab dip
Getting the right color on a nylon yarn is not a matter of luck: it is a structured laboratory process that starts from a reference and arrives at a recipe that is repeatable in production. At the heart of this process is the lab dip.
The starting point: the color reference
Everything begins with a reference supplied by the customer: a sample of already-dyed yarn, a swatch of fabric, a Pantone code or a colorimetric standard. Every time we receive a sample to develop, we read it with our Konica Minolta spectrophotometer, which measures the color objectively (L*a*b* coordinates), removing the ambiguity of judging by eye.
Formulation
From the instrumental reading, thanks to our Datacolor formulation software, we obtain a first dyeing recipe that we then develop in the laboratory. The software proposes the combination of dyes — typically acid or premetallized, suitable for nylon — and the colorist's experience corrects it: the real behaviour of the bath depends on the material, on the yarn count and on the machine conditions.
The lab dip
The lab dip is the trial dyeing: the recipe is developed on a small quantity of material, reproducing production conditions on a small scale. Depending on the customer's request and the agreements, we develop three lab dips, which can be made:
- on nylon fabric — which we call Tirelle;
- directly on the nylon yarn — which we call Filzuoli.
The result is measured and compared with the reference: if it falls within the agreed tolerance (a given ΔE) we proceed, otherwise we correct the recipe and repeat the trial. A good laboratory aims to hit the color in the fewest possible trials, because every cycle is time and cost.
Alternatively, the customer can request actual sampling baths — from 1 kg up to 10 kg — to confirm the color on a more representative quantity before launching production.
Confirmation and repeatability
Once the color is confirmed, we document and archive the recipe and the original samples in our archive, both digital and physical. This is what allows us to guarantee repeatability between baths: the same color can be reproduced identically over time, batch after batch, even months later.
Why it matters for buyers
For a sock or narrow-fabric manufacturer, knowing that behind the color there is an instrumental and traceable process means predictability: estimable development times, declared tolerances and colors that can be reordered over time without surprises.
